PARK AVENUE PRESERVATION TOUR, 6PM, JULY 14

The City Club of New York sponsored a Park Avenue Preservation Tour on the evening of July 14. Francoise Bollack, Chair of the Preservation Committee, and Jeffrey Kroessler, President, walked the participants through the preservation battles that have shaped and continue to shape Park Avenue, and identified buildings that merit designation.

The 2017 upzoning of East Midtown, the blocks once known as Terminal City, meant that no building was too historic, or too big to be demolished and replaced. Significant structures are now threatened, and the Union Carbide Building at 270 Park Avenue is now gone. A plan to replace the former Hotel Commodore is advancing.

Highlights of the tour included what was once an automobile showroom designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Seagram Building, Lever House, St. Bartholomew’s, and the Postum Building, concluding at Grand Central Terminal. Each has a preservation tale to tell.

Following are some photos from the tour.
